Solange – ‘Losing You’

Please excuse my short absence… despite my lack of reporting we have a lot to catch up on.

Firstly, let me address the out the park home run scored on Oct. 1 with the release of Solange’s video for “Losing You”. The video has in no time reached nearly 1.5 million views to date and continues to climb. It only takes about two seconds to realize that the video is going to hold you attention in a similar way as Major Lazer’s recent release of the video for Get Free only this video was shot in Capetown, South Africa and has a throwback to mid 50’s, 60’s, and early 70’s style. The video was directed by Melina Matsoukos and is absolutely stunning, captivating, and all around seriously worth your while – especially after being paired with the sounds of Solange’s pitch perfect vocal styling, sweet dance moves and perfect fashion.

It is with obvious reasons that this song/video combo has been both ‘On Repeat’ in my house and has me lost in the vastness that is the Knowles Family Talent-  wondering which sister is more talented- Beyonce or Solange … despite the reality that there is no rivalry I still cannot help but link and compare the sisters. In an interview with the Daily Mail, Solange is quoted saying: “People think there should be this great rivalry between us, but there’s never been any competition. There’s a big age gap and we are two very different characters.”

- and the truth is I agree they are vastly different artists and to ask to choose a winner would appear to be based on purely a matter of taste….

I will say that for me I love them both for the unique and indivual niches they fill. Solange and her power house team’s less mainstream and creative new release just took a huge step upwards to fill her independent thrown and to get my vote this round . Take a watch and let me know what you think. Solange or Beyonce?

The single was written/produced by Knowles and Blood Orange’s Dev Hynes (who has also written for Florence and the Machine and the Chemical Brothers and is signed to one of my favorite labels to follow on Sound Cloud- Domino Records.

The video features designer Lizzy Okpo, and highly stylized dapper men in brightly colored suits known as Sapeurs. If you would like to read more about the inspiration behind the video and its fashion check out this article on Fader.

The single has been released digitally, and will be out on on vinyl on Nov 6 and is available for pre-order at Terrible Records – a label that is co-run by bassist Chris Taylor of the band Grizzly Bear that recently put out another video that has gained much attention. Featuring a slightly demented journey following an figure skater the video “Yet Again” was done by Emily Kai Bock the same director that did the Grimes video for Oblivion.

To wrap all this up I would like to leave you with another song that was recently introduced to me, but is from 2007 that I think is well paired with the above tunes… not so much for the Muppet music video but for the same sonic qualities featuring electronic song bird chirp-like pop. Here is Escort’s video for – ‘All Through the Night’.
